3000km Intervals on Computer

Hey everyone,

This isn't affecting me, but as I was washing the ol' girl on Saturday, a guy and his family drove by and spotted my Eco. He backed up down the road to flag me down, and wanted to ask me about my oil change intervals. I figured this was going to be a Old Spec vs. New Spec conversation, but he started off by telling me that his computer is telling him to do an oil change every 3000 kilometers (that's about 1865 miles by the by).

He took it to the dealer and they told him to just reset the computer when it said that, showed him how, and sent him on his way. He was inquiring about whether it was something I had to deal with/had dealt with ever in the past. We're both driving effectively the same truck, except I think his was an ST (had the black matte bumpers) but otherwise the same. I told him of course not, my computer tells me 16,000KM to the kilometer.

Obviously I suggested he take it back, and tell them that isn't right. I asked him if he'd had any updates done, whether he was running the new old spec or the old spec, etc. He didn't seem to really be in the know about all that. I gave him my card and wrote the number of the dealership I go to and told him to go there, speak to my service manager and that'd he'd sort it out.

But I was wondering what you guys thought about that 3000km interval on the computer. I mean, at first I thought that maybe somehow they'd flashed his ECU with a Gasser flash, but that wouldn't make any sense at all. Those don't even have 3000km intervals and I doubt it's even possible, or that the engine would ever run with that kind of ECU flash.

Then I thought maybe he'd had the flash, but not the oil spec change, but the computer shouldn't be making any calculations, it should simply be 0-16,000KM, period.

Any thoughts? Doesn't really matter, I don't think the fella frequents these forums but I am genuinely curious.
